Marrying moody trip-hop beats with fingerpicked guitars and country-tinged rock arrangements, Beth Orton’s 1996 solo debut album is a careful mixture of opposing styles that accentuates her plaintive songwriting. Setting her coolly commanding voice in stark relief, “She Cries Your Name” brings together soft acoustic guitars with images of burned-out trees, while “Galaxy of Emptiness” emphasises dubby effects and swirling electronic atmospheres. At the other end of the spectrum, the acoustic lament “I Wish I Never Saw the Sunshine” is as delicate as it is forlorn.
